Sustainable Development / Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Sustainable Development

Globalization and economic integration have made the subject of Corporate Social Responsibility a crucial matter when one attempts to evaluate economic and social development. Given this, guiding principles are being established in the international arena (United Nations Global Compact, Voluntary Principles, and the Global Reporting Initiative, amongst others), and entities and organizations are being created in the pursuit of this goal and for evaluating the best practices in the world. Cerrejón acts under these principles of international consensus and is a pioneering company in Colombia in their adoption.

Our responsibility to the neighbouring communities goes far beyond the role of generating employment and royalties. Widespread social engagement and a relationship with the inhabitants of the district of La Guajira, bearing in mind the international standards of multilateral organizations, constitute the foundations of our actions on this front.

To promote and support ambitious projects directed towards the strengthening of regional sustainable development, we have created the Cerrejón Foundations System as well, whose objective is to work for the sustainability of the department of La Guajira.

Human Rights

Since 2006, Cerrejón has had a Human Rights Policy, through which the Company is committed and commits its contractors to protect, respect, and promote human rights for its employees, for contractors, and for the communities within its surroundings, and to promote ethical behaviour, which we consider raises our competitiveness.
