Global Business Initiative: This is an initiative of companies from different sectors that are interesting in sharing best practices in human rights topics. Cerrejón is the only Latin American business that is part of this initiative. The members are: ABB Group, Cerrejón, Flextronics International Limited, General Electric Company, HP, JSL Stainless Limited, Mansour, Novo Nordisk A/S, Royal Dutch Shell plc, Sime Darby, The Coca-Cola Company, Total S.A., and Unilever plc.

Voluntary Principles: Code of conduct for multinationals in the extractive sector. These principles set forth specific actions for more systematic evaluation and management of business activity risks and impacts. They also serve as guides for business relations with state security bodies and private security companies.

Global Compact: The Global Compact is a United Nations initiative that is voluntarily shouldered by the business sector. Upon stating their membership, companies commit to aligning their strategies and operations with ten universally accepted principles in four thematic areas: human rights, labour standards, the environment, and anti-corruption. Due to the number of participants (several thousand in over 100 countries), the Global Compact is the largest corporate citizen initiative in the world.

Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean In support of the United Nations Global Compact, is an initiative by CEOs and organizations from various economic sectors. The aim of this undertaking is to promote compliance with the 10 principles of the Global Compact within businesses. These principles cover the protection of human rights and issues concerning labour, the environment, and the fight against corruption. Cerrejón is one of the ten founding members of the Centre, and is currently one of thirteen private companies associated with the initiative.

Colombian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CECODES, its acronym in Spanish): An organization formed by a group of companies convinced that Sustainable Development is an option for achieving greater profitability, improving people's quality of life, and the rational use of natural resources.

Large-Scale Mining Sector: Covers formal mining dedicated to the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources that counts on considerable reserves and is responsible for a good portion of the production and exports in minerals and metals of a country.
