Social Standards and International Relations

Cerrejón has undertaken its operations responsibly and with respect for the environment, persons working at the company, and the neighbouring communities. As we are aware that the sustainability of our operation depends on our social license and on compliance with community expectations, we have adopted standards in our community outreach that aim to assess operational impacts, promote and respect human rights, foster the development of La Guajira and the communities in our area of influence, and carry out our activities transparently.

Social Standards:
Cerrejón has adopted the highest standards as concerns respect for the human rights of workers, contractors, and communities in our area of influence, and these standards guide the daily activities of all Company areas. Special attention is due the respect for the human rights of the Wayuu people, for their ways, customs, and traditional authorities. Cerrejón employees charged with community outreach are trained in these standards for their daily work. We also train members of contractor firms for private security and the Public Security Forces assigned to our area of operations. Since 2006, Cerrejón has had a Human Rights Policy, through which the Company is committed and commits its contractors to respect and promote human rights for its employees, for contractors, and for the communities within its surroundings, and to promote ethical behaviour, which we consider raises our competitiveness.

Cerrejón has implemented a Complaints Office to address possible negative impacts from the operation anywhere throughout our area of influence under the framework of Professor John Ruggie to "Protect, respect, and remedy".
