Cerrejón operations continue to be impacted by several illegal blockades

September 6, 2022. For six days, Cerrejón's operations have been affected by several illegal blockades that border the operation. These blockades, while peaceful, are preventing access to the operations.

The protestors are demanding access to water services, greater social investment and jobs in the company.

In addition to the existing disruption, other blockades, that are unconnected to Cerrejon, have commenced on the national highway which connects Albania with Uribia. These blockades are being led by transport associations demanding more security and maintenance of the roads.

70% of Cerrejón's operations are being affected by these blockades.

If these blockades continue, Cerrejón may have to suspend some service contracts, which will negatively impact local numerous regional suppliers and thus the broader regional economy. The blockades will also reduce Cerrejón's contribution to the Colombian state in the form of lower taxes and royalties.

Cerrejon is committed to building lasting partnerships with its host communities. In the last year, more than 200 consultation agreements have been signed with the communities in Cerrejón's area of influence, within the framework of ruling T-704. Actually, the company is implementing over 300 projects that are currently underway to address education, access to water and jobs.

At Cerrejón we have been a partner with the local communities, providing access to water, supporting sustainable livelihoods and, moreover, creating thousands of jobs in the region. We are committed to making a positive contribution to the wellbeing of the communities in our area of influence and to support the ongoing development of La Guajira, said Claudia Bejarano, Cerrejón’s President.

Cerrejón remains committed to dialogue and maintaining strong partnerships with its communities. We call on the authorities to support a peaceful resolution of the blockades, in accordance with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.

Social and environmental investment and payments to the State during 2022 (January-July)

  • Cerrejón has invested in social projects 29,534 million pesos.
  • Environmental investment for a total of 94.852 million pesos.
  • As royalties, the company has already paid 741.793 million pesos.
  • The company has paid more than 1.76 billion[1] pesos in income tax.
