Cerrejón hosts German parliamentarian Kathrin Henneberger

July 27, 2022. Cerrejón was pleased to host a delegation of German visitors, including Greens MP Kathrin Henneberger, a representative of the German Embassy in Colombia and two national media outlets. During yesterday’s visit, we provided a tour of our operations and land rehabilitation work and discussed Cerrejón’s social and environmental performance and our relationship with local communities.

Cerrejón is a responsible operation that focuses on protecting our people, respecting the environment and supporting local communities”, said Luis Eduardo Marulanda, Cerrejón vice president of Public Affairs and Communications. Hosting international delegations is important for us as this enables us to demonstrate our approach and performance while also openly discussing areas of specific interest to our guests and addressing any questions they have.”

As part of our ongoing engagement with stakeholders, Cerrejón has already received six visits from international delegations in 2022, including politicians, ambassadors and the media.

During yesterday’s visit, we provided our guests with access to our control center, where they saw how the entire Cerrejón operation is coordinated to ensure that it complies with all environmental standards and Colombian regulations. We then took our visitors to see and one of our open pit operations and helped them understand the different phases of the production process.

The first part of the visit concluded with a visit to a rehabilitated area, which a few years ago had been a working pit.  This area has now become part of the Wuin Manna biodiversity corridor, which will connect the Perijá mountain range with the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta.

During this part of the visit, we discussed our approach to water management, in particular the fact that 89% of the water used at Cerrejón is not suitable for human, animal or agricultural consumption and the way that the conservation programs within Cerrejón have allowed the flow of the Ranchería River to increase, on average, by 37% as it passes through the operation.

In the second part of the visit, we discussed our relationship with the local communities and the development of local projects carried out in partnership with them to improve their living conditions. We talked about the projects to improve access to water and Cerrejón explained hisHuman Rights due diligence processes, which enables us to prevent, mitigate and, if necessary, compensate, were explained. their impacts on communities.

It is worth noting that, from an emissions reduction perspective, Cerrejón's emissions are accounted for in the climate change commitments of our parent company Glencore. These targets include a 15% reduction in total emissions (including Scope 3) by 2026; a 50% reduction in total emissions by 2035 and the goal of being a company with zero total net emissions by 2050.
