Declaration of Protected Areas

At Cerrejón, we seek to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and protect ecosystems. We have over 30 years of experience in environmental rehabilitation across various ecosystems, both at the mine and at Puerto Bolívar.

Thanks to our alliance with Conservation International, the Fundación Herencia Ambiental Caribe, and Corpoguajira, we have achieved the declaration of more than 60,000 hectares of protected areas. Among these prominent areas are the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve and the Integrated Management District (DMI) of the upper and lower Ranchería River basin—key areas for the conservation of regional biodiversity.

An example of our commitment to environmental preservation is the coexistence of Puerto Bolívar with the Bahía Portete National Natural Park, declared in 2014 with the support of Cerrejón. This action highlights our dedication to protecting the region’s ecosystems.

Additionally, we facilitated the declaration of a private civil society nature reserve in the region: Aguas Blancas – Santa Helena – Mushaisa. This reserve, spanning almost 2,000 hectares across the municipalities of Albania and Hatonuevo, represents an important step for the conservation of local flora and fauna.

Through these initiatives, Cerrejón reaffirms its commitment to environmental conservation and the protection of natural areas in the Colombian Caribbean.
