20 New students enrol in Tecnoguajira

With the start of the academic year, 20 new students were enrolled in the Mining Equipment Maintenance program at Tecnoguajira, which will teach them skills to repair and maintain machinery and equipment used in the mining sector.

Since its creation in 2012, over 800 students have enrolled in the mining equipment maintenance and operation programs and 402 have graduated. Of these, 60% are currently employed in the production sector.

“Our goal is to offer regional youths the opportunity for quality instruction without having to travel to other cities, which involves fewer costs for parents to invest in their children’s education. Therefore, in addition to the mining sector programs, another three new programs in non-mining areas were created to train the workforce needed for La Guajira’s strategic development lines: residential electrical installations, maintenance of computer equipment and networks, and tourism services. Furthermore, in the second half of 2016, we will be creating an agricultural technician program,” stated Alonso Franco, director of Tecnoguajira.

Tecnoguajira also provides ongoing training for technicians in Cerrejón’s Maintenance Department and training in operational integrity for the company’s employees and contractors. In 2015, the institution’s 20 instructors gave 34,344 hours of training to Cerrejón’s employees and contractors.

“I feel motivated and I want to take advantage of this opportunity. I will do my best every day, every moment, with every task and facet of my career. I hope that the skills and knowledge the teachers give us are useful in performing in our work down the road,” stated Eduardo José Brito Vargas, a recent graduate who dreams of forming his own company to provide work in Hatonuevo with his acquired knowledge.

Through Tecnoguajira, the Cerrejón Foundation for Institutional Strengthening in La Guajira contributes to the region’s sustainability by providing quality training for human resources by developing labour skills that will allow workers to maintain their quality of life and contribute to the department’s development.
