Coastal Pilots Certified

With the delivery of coastal pilot navigation licenses, 15 Wayuu indigenous people from the Media Luna sector successfully completed the process authorizing them to pilot small boats, encouraging compliance with the regulations established for Seamen. This process included a basic outboard motor course, medical certification of their physical fitness for service at sea, and the formality of issuing the licenses.

Daniel Iguarán Uriana, from the Kamüsüchiwo>u community, thanked the institutions that have helped and motivated him to obtain this license, which is an essential work tool. “This certification helps us with our fishing activities, the transporting of tourists, and also with  working on small merchant boats, increasing our income and therefore our quality of life.”

“Today, we finished a project that started eight months ago as an idea for the Media Luna communities, which will permit them to boost their production and commercial activities,” declared the Deputy Director of the Merchant Marine of the Colombian Maritime Authority and Frigate Captain, Germán Rojas Hernández. He added that the initiative was carried out due to the need to safely move visitors between points of great tourist importance for the department, such as the Cabo de la Vela, Media Luna, and Punta Gallinas.
