Cerrejón condemns threats against journalists and civil servants in La Guajira

As in the past with similar situations, Cerrejón wishes to publicly express how disturbed we are about the recent threats, in the form of pamphlets, aimed at journalists in Albania, Manaure and Barrancas, which has been reported by regional news outlets, and how sincerely we condemn these types of acts.

We are genuinely concerned that these threats are now affecting what we consider one of the most important pillars of society, our media professionals, in a blatant attempt to intimidate them and prevent freedom of expression and a free and open press. As we have done before, we are calling for these actions to come to an immediate end, that the cases be fully investigated and that we see results from the judicial inquiries.

In light of these new events, the company once again strongly urges the authorities to take all necessary preventive measures in order to protect the lives and well-being of those who have been threatened.

As always, the company will continue to support open journalism and a free press in the region as part of our respect and promotion of the human rights of our employees, contractors and the people living in the neighbouring communities. At Cerrejón, we again urge that effective mechanisms be implemented to find long-term solutions for these truly worrisome episodes in La Guajira as well as in the rest of the country.
