Reclamation program

Since the beginning of our operation and, as part of our commitment to the environment, we have rehabilitated the lands where, previously, we undertook open-pit mining.

Through this program, we were able to transform a land intervened by mining into forest areas with a stable and productive environment that allows the establishment, sustainment, and renewal of native flora and fauna species. Thanks to the reconstruction of these habitats, we have seen the return of wildlife fauna species, that have been spontaneously establishing and preserving themselves, such as deer (“venados cauqueros”), honey bears, tigrillos, morrocoys, sparrow hawks, and major populations of birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles.

Agrosilvopastoral Program

With the experience and the learning acquired in our Land Rehabilitation program, we have developed
other supplementary initiatives such as the “Programa de Investigación y Aplicación en Sistemas de
Producción rural tipo Agrosilvopastoriles Sostenibles” (Program for Research and Application in rural
Sustainable Production Systems), with which we transfer technology to local communities for the good use
and management of land.

With this program we seek to implement methodologies to fight against poverty, land degradation, desertification, and climate change in dry tropical forests, aligned to the Sustainable Development
Objectives.

Program recognized by the Ministry of Mines and Energy
and the National Hydrocarbons Agency, becuase it is an environmental and social management significant experience of the mining-energy sector.

Towards the rehabilitation of land interviened by open-pit mining

Written by Ramón Gualdrón Forero, it explains a pioneering method in the country that has become a reference for the national and international mining industry. It was the result of a combination of pure sciences, technical experiences, empiricism, and traditional knowledge that we started more than 30 years ago, convinced of the importance and the need of soil preservation and its vegetation covers.
