The volume of flow in the Ranchería River increases by more than 30% in its passage through Cerrejón’s operations

The volume of flow in the Ranchería River increases by more than 30% in its passage through Cerrejón’s operations according to data from three IDEAM gauge stations measuring the flow upstream, in, and downstream of the operations.

The company has also installed a real-time system to monitor surface water quality and quantity at different points of the Ranchería River and its tributary streams surrounding the operations. The pilot phase of this initiative reveals that the water quality and quantity are at adequate levels.

The online monitoring network comprises 29 sensors measuring different variables at key sampling points, which allow the real-time observation of current conditions. This permits decision-making to gauge the possible causes in variations in the water quality.

Thanks to this system, the company can monitor water levels and quality to ensure that our operations’ activities that interact with water comply with regulations on discharges and do not impact the quality nor the uses for water downstream of the operations.

“The protection and conservation of water is one of our priorities at Cerrejón, which is why we are committed to the efficient, responsible use of this resource in our operations. These types of initiatives allow us to implement new technologies to be more efficient and rigorous in watershed management,” stated Ana Portilla, leader of Cerrejón’s Comprehensive Water Management.

In addition, Daniel Rondón, a member of the Envirosuite team in charge of the system’s operation, commented that “It is important to highlight Cerrejón’s performance in this project of technology applied to environmental management, in this case the quality and quantity of water.”

Monitoring water in our operations is an example of the company’s commitment to comprehensive water management.
