National Geographic and Indigenous Leaders Visit Cerrejón

august 24, 2025. As part of its ongoing commitment to intercultural dialogue and responsible environmental stewardship, Cerrejón welcomed in July 2025 a visit from a National Geographic team and Mamos – spiritual authorities of the Arhuaco and Wiwa Indigenous peoples from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

During the visit, the Mamos shared their spiritual worldview, emphasizing the deep connection between environmental balance and ancestral rituals. These reflections provided a powerful perspective on the spiritual dimensions of environmental stewardship and the role of Indigenous knowledge in safeguarding ecosystems.

The visit also offered the opportunity to present Cerrejón’s ongoing efforts in land rehabilitation, biodiversity protection, and cultural heritage preservation. For the Indigenous leaders, it served as a step toward strengthening relationships not only with the company but also between communities from La Guajira and neighboring Cesar.

Cerrejón is committed to environmental and social responsibility, recognizing that long-term sustainability requires listening to diverse voices and fostering mutual understanding. Initiatives like this visit reaffirm the company’s intention to contribute to a shared vision of coexistence and care for the territory.
