Glossary

Mining Terms

Thermal Coal
Type of coal mainly used for power generation. We produce high-quality coal that meets international standards and is in demand in global markets during the energy transition.

Productive Linkages
Commercial and contracting relationships with local suppliers and businesses. We foster these connections to boost the regional economy and strengthen the capabilities of La Guajira’s business network.

Mining Export
International commercialization of coal produced in our operation. We comply with all legal and customs requirements through entities such as the DIAN, the National Mining Agency, and the Ministry of Commerce.

Railway Line
Freight transportation infrastructure that connects the mine with the port. Spanning 150 km, it passes through various communities. We manage its operation with a preventive approach, ensuring safety, respect for the surroundings, and timely response to any eventuality.

Integrated Mining Operation
Model that encompasses all phases of the process: mine extraction, rail transportation, and port shipment. Our operation connects the mining pit in La Guajira to Puerto Bolívar, the export port located on the Colombian Caribbean coast.

Puerto Bolívar
Deep-water maritime terminal from where Cerrejón exports coal, located in Upper Guajira. It operates under standards of efficiency, safety, and sustainability, making it one of the most important of its kind in the country.

Royalties
Resources we provide to the Colombian State for the exploitation of non-renewable natural resources. These contributions are allocated to social investment in municipalities and departments, especially in sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.

Industrial Safety
A set of practices, regulations, and systems aimed at preventing workplace accidents. We implement the Safework 2.0 strategy to eliminate fatalities and promote a culture of self-care and protection across all our operational environments.

Social Terms

Blockade
Interruption of roads, infrastructure, or operations by social actors as a form of protest. While we understand the social tensions in the region, we promote dialogue channels that allow differences to be resolved without resorting to blockades that affect workers, communities, and operations.

Neighboring Communities
Populations located within our direct or indirect area of influence. They are key allies in building trust, development, and ongoing dialogue.

Prior Consultation
A fundamental right of Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples to be consulted before any project that may affect them. We comply with this requirement in accordance with the law, ensuring free, prior, and informed participation.

Intercultural Dialogue
A process of mutual understanding and recognition between different worldviews, especially between the company and Indigenous peoples. It is essential in our engagement to reach legitimate and lasting agreements.

Social Dialogue
Ongoing, transparent, and constructive interaction with communities, authorities, and other social actors, aimed at preventing conflicts, managing expectations, and strengthening trust-based relationships.

Community Empowerment
Technical, organizational, and training support to communities so they can manage their own development processes. We implement it from a perspective of autonomy and sustainability.

Compensation Plan
A set of actions agreed upon with communities and authorities to mitigate the social and/or environmental impacts of an authorized project. We develop it as part of our commitments in consultation processes and environmental licensing.

Intangible Cultural Heritage Management Plan
A strategy to identify, preserve, and promote the living cultural expressions of communities, such as rituals, knowledge, traditions, and artistic manifestations. We develop it as part of our respect for the diversity and cultural roots of La Guajira.

Resettlement
The process of relocating communities to a new territory, with social, cultural, and economic guarantees. We carry it out in dialogue with residents, respecting their identity and customs.

Community Engagement
Ongoing, respectful, and structured dialogue with communities. It is the foundation of our social management to build trust and generate shared value.

Relations with Neighboring Communities
Permanent connection with the populations located in our area of influence. We foster trust-based relationships built on respect, dialogue, and the fulfillment of agreements.

Indigenous Reserves
Collective territories of Indigenous communities recognized by the State. We respect their autonomy, boundaries, and organization, and participate in dialogue and cooperation processes.

Livelihood Restoration
Actions aimed at restoring the economic and social conditions of communities that have been resettled or impacted by projects. We continuously evaluate results to ensure the well-being and sustainability of these populations.

Ruling T-704
Ruling by the Constitutional Court that ordered Cerrejón to implement a mitigation plan for the communities in its area of influence and to consult with them on the necessary compensations. Based on this ruling, we strengthened our rights-based approach in community work.

Community Environmental Oversight
A citizen participation mechanism that allows community members to monitor environmental processes that affect them. We support its creation and strengthening as part of our commitments to transparency and shared responsibility.

Environmental Terms

Environmental Management Plan
For the development of our operations, we have an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) that was evaluated and approved by the Environmental Authority. This plan includes management measures to prevent, mitigate, correct, and/or compensate for potential environmental impacts associated with our activities. It also incorporates monitoring and follow-up programs that allow us to assess the effectiveness of these measures and define the actions to be implemented in the event of any contingency.

Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center
A specialized facility, operated in partnership with the Omacha Foundation, dedicated to caring for, rehabilitating, and releasing rescued wild animals. It is an essential component of our biodiversity conservation strategy in La Guajira.

Environmental Offsets
Actions established by the environmental authority to balance the impacts of an intervention. These include tree planting, habitat restoration, or environmental benefit projects for communities.

Environmental Education and Culture
Programs that promote respect for, conservation of, and knowledge about the natural environment among workers, families, and neighboring communities. We develop campaigns, workshops, and training initiatives as part of our participatory environmental management approach.

Endangered Species
Fauna and flora at risk of extinction, according to official categories. We implement protection, monitoring, and recovery actions as part of our Endangered Species Conservation Program.

Bruno Creek Channel Modification
Authorized intervention carried out in 2017 to move the Bruno Creek channel 700 meters north. It was executed with community participation and under environmental supervision. Since then, we have continuously monitored the recovery of its flow, vegetation, and biodiversity.

Environmental Monitoring
Ongoing technical tracking of variables such as air quality, water quality, noise, flora, and fauna. We have stations, sensors, and tools that ensure traceability and compliance with environmental regulations.

Ecological Rehabilitation
Restoration of areas intervened by mining operations using techniques that allow the recovery of ecological functions, the return of wildlife, and the sustainability of the environment. We have rehabilitated more than 5,200 hectares to date.

Revegetation
The progressive recovery of plant cover in intervened areas. This includes the planting of native species and ecosystem restoration to ensure the regeneration of the tropical dry forest.

Efficient Water Use
Responsible management of water resources. We primarily use rainwater or water stored in non-potable areas, reducing pressure on natural sources. We also promote good water-use practices in neighboring communities.

Conservation Areas
Protected zones within our territory where any type of intervention is restricted and the preservation of strategic ecosystems is promoted. They are key to protecting species and environmental services.
