jaguars sighted in our protected areas

At Cerrejón, our environmental actions are focused on biodiversity conservation. One of our most significant achievements has been the return of the jaguar to the region. Currently, we have identified 10 jaguars, including cubs born in our areas, which reflects a recovery of this endangered species in the region. The presence of the jaguar, an umbrella species, can be anindicator of the health and recovery of ecosystems and water bodies in the area.

In addition to jaguars, we have recorded the presence of 15 pumas and more than 30 ocelots, which share the same hunting territories and water sources.

Thanks to initiatives such as the restoration and protection of the tropical dry forest, as well as the rehabilitation and continuous monitoring of wildlife, we have promoted the well-being of more than 600 species. These include mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish, and birds that inhabit the biodiversity corridor of more than 25,000 hectares that we are protecting between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá.

Our commitment to the biodiversity of La Guajira remains a priority. We aim to support local wildlife and be a model for sustainable conservation.

To learn more you can visit our Cerrejón Biodiversity space on the Naturalista website, which is a biodiversity registration tool where we share the species of fauna and flora we identify in our region, and where everyone can participate by making their own records.

Wildlife rehabilitation and conservation

At Cerrejón, wildlife rehabilitation and conservation are a fundamental part of our mining activities. We develop comprehensive strategies for animal rescue and rehabilitation, contributing to the well-being of local fauna and supporting the protection of endangered species in La Guajira. These actions are carried out in close collaboration with local communities, to help ensure a sustainable and environmentally respectful approach.

We have a modern Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, a space designed to house, care for, and rehabilitate animals that require specialized attention. At this center, our team of experts, consisting of biologists, veterinarians, and assistants, work hard to ensure the proper management of each species, promoting their recovery and preparing them for release into their natural habitat.

The activities at the center include:

  • Rescue of animals and specialized veterinary care.
  • Breeding and conservation of endangered species.
  • Wildlife monitoring to assess the status of local populations.
  • Environmental education and raising awareness in the community about the impacts of illegal wildlife trafficking, hunting, and the possession of wild animals in the region.

The rehabilitation and conservation activities we carry out are key for protecting the biodiversity of La Guajira, helping the recovery of threatened species and their reintroduction into their natural ecosystems. In addition, we aim to raise awareness about the dangers faced by local species due to poaching, illegal trafficking, and habitat destruction.

Our work not only supports the recovery of wildlife but also contributes to the ecological balance of the region, promoting a healthier environment for future generations.
