Rehabilitation
At Cerrejón, land rehabilitation is an important part of our mining operations. Since the start of our activities, we have rehabilitated more than 5,000 hectares of land that were previously used for open-pit mining. These areas are being transformed, with the goal of returning them to nature in the form of regenerated forests.
Land rehabilitation can not only promote soil recovery but also supports biodiversity. Thanks to our efforts, we have witnessed the return of various species of wildlife that have settled in these new habitats. Among these species are the jaguar, deer, honey bears, ocelots, red-footed tortoises, and hawks, as well as a diverse population of birds, insects, amphibians, and reptiles.
At Cerrejón, we support environmental rehabilitation and sustainable mining projects.
Reforestation and environmental conservation
At Cerrejón we seek to conserve and restore local ecosystems. Through our reforestation program, we have planted more than 3.7 million native trees, representing over 40 indigenous species. This effort is part of an ambitious project to create a biodiversity corridor of more than 25,000 hectares, connecting the Serranía del Perijá and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Our work focuses not only on reforestation but also on the protection of threatened and endangered species such as palo de vera, black sapote, perehuetano, olla del mono, rain tree, and garcero. We believe these efforts are key to preserving the region’s rich biodiversity.
In addition to reforestation, we implement programs such as Silvopastoral Agricultural Production Systems, which aim to integrate soil conservation with sustainable farming and livestock practices. This program encourages the participation of local communities, promoting the responsible use of land and the adoption of more efficient agricultural technologies.
We have also established conservation agreements with communities, associations, and families in the region to promote the restoration and protection of strategic areas near the mine. We believe these agreements help strengthen the shared commitment to ecological restoration and maintaining environmental health around Cerrejón.
Sustainability and environmental conservation are important, which is why we continue working to support a sustainable, biodiverse future for generations to come.
