20 Young guajirans will participate in the caribbean champions tournament in barranquilla

December 23 of 2019. Twenty young people from Albania, Barrancas, Hatonuevo, Maicao, Uribia, Villanueva, and the city of Riohacha in the Cerrejón Guajira Selection are participating in the Caribbean Champions Tournament to be held in Barranquilla on January 4 to 13 of 2020. The youths are currently in the physical training and technical-coordination stage with the support of the Cerrejón Sports program and the Fondecor Foundation, and will then represent La Guajira at this important tournament.

The young athletes participated in the selection phase in November and December of 2019, demonstrating their talent and commitment to the sport. Those selected showed great physical and technical skills and will certainly be excellent representatives of our Guajiran talent in Barranquilla.

“For Cerrejón, it is extremely important to work for the future generations of the department of La Guajira. That is why we are greatly interested in showcasing the talent of these young people in tournaments, musical events, sports, and recreation. We thus wish to contribute to having these young people envisage other life opportunities and thereby build a better future,” commented Víctor Garrido, supervisor of Communities at Cerrejón.

Sport is a huge scenario for social involvement that allows youngsters to focus on developing community skills such as fairness, social justice, and fostering a culture of health and well-being, transmitting values and encourage peaceful conflict resolution through healthy competition.

“This tournament is going to give me more experience. It will help me to be more competitive and, since I want to play professionally, in this tournament I will have the opportunity of being seen by trainers from other cities and countries. Thank you to Cerrejón and Fondecor because they made it possible for us to be in this tournament. We hope they keep supporting the athletes of La Guajira,” said Elías Quintero Fuentes, a young athlete in the Cerrejón Guajira Selection.

Cerrejón’s Sports Program contributes to the company’s engagement with communities. We work on making good use of free time for children, youths, and adults and on adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

For Cerrejón, enabling and drawing attention to the skills of young Guajirans through these sports events is essential since it develops the talent in our region.
