Cerrejón and its Foundation sign a cooperation agreement with Komatsu for the education of young people in La Guajira.

August 6, 2019. Cerrejón and its Foundation signed a five-year cooperation agreement with the multinational Komatsu Limited to contribute to strengthening the educational and labor capacities of La Guajira. The agreement was signed at the Komatsu facilities in Bogotá and was attended by SEO for South America and president of Komatsu Chile, Yasushi Sakano; the general manager of Komatsu Colombia, Patricio Pereira, and the director of Corporate Affairs for Latin America, Jaime Uribe.

This alliance aims to strengthen the technical education of the Guajirans through training in Tecnoguajira, in the municipality of Barrancas. With it, a total of 35 young Guajirans will be awarded, seven per year; train 10 instructors of the educational institution, two per year; It will also promote the improvement of the curriculum of the Mining Equipment Maintenance program and the participation of Komatsu in the Business Roundtable organized annually by Cerrejón.

This articulation will also allow Komatsu to give priority to Tecnoguajira graduates and people from the department in their selection processes, in accordance with their selection and hiring policy. “This agreement not only provides technical assistance but also to the region, La Guajira, its young people, their families and the entire community, is the main objective of this project”, said Jaime Uribe, director of Corporate Affairs of Komatsu Latin America.

Lina Echeverri, Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications of Cerrejón expressed her desire for consolidation of this agreement which is expected to be a long-term alliance. “We hope with this step, to develop, for our youth and for La Guajira, opportunities of employability, but above all for the development and improvement of the quality of life for the beneficiaries and their families.”
