Cerrejón closed 2018 with 30.5 million tons of coal exported

February 7, 2019. Thanks to the commitment and dedication of a work team consisting of 6,100+ direct employees and to the support of its contracting companies, Cerrejón was able to export 30.5 million tons of coal in 2018, in the midst of a challenging environment, due to the judicial rulings that prevented it from having access to some operation areas and to strong rains that affected the development of mining activities, especially in May, September and October. This amount is lower than the 31.7 million tons exported in 2017, which represents another year of operation contraction as a result of environment difficulties.

“The export levels reached are the result of the daily efforts made by each of our employees and contracting companies, who, from their different roles in operation and administration areas, allow us to continue to offer a quality product to the market and to generate value in La Guajira and in the country. We feel proud with our achievements, despite the fact that we were not able to access major coal reserves, such as those of the La Puente pit. We are concerned about the operation’s contraction trend and this year we are prepared to improve and innovate our engagement practices, looking for counteracting this trend. Cerrejón’s coal reserves are a top-of-the-line asset of all Colombians; its value-generation potential is trapped, losing socio-economic development opportunities. We, among all actors, aim to transform the dynamics of the region into a collaborative one, which, together with a legal certainty environment, would allow takin up the path of growth and value-generation for all of us”, said Guillermo Fonseca Onofre, President of Cerrejón.
