Cerrejón denounces new threats against social leaders in La Guajira

May 3, 2019. Cerrejón would like to express its concern and repudiation of the threats against representatives of the organization Wayuu Women Force (Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu). The company denounces such threatening acts, which endanger the life, dignity, and physical well-being of these leaders and their families.

Given this situation, the company has requested to the competent authorities to investigate and protect the life and well-being of these people in the light of the mentioned new events.

The respect and promotion of human rights of our employees, contractors, and neighbouring communities are a priority to Cerrejón. That is why, in 2018, we signed the Joint Declaration for Life together with representatives from the State, various organizations, and civil society. The Declaration ratifies the commitment to work on protecting leaders and human rights defenders in the departments of La Guajira and Cesar.

Cerrejón reiterates its concern over these threats to the life and dignity of the Guajiran community.
