Cerrejón reactivates operations at the mine

After implementing the necessary measures and protocols to reduce the risk of infection of COVID-19 and ensure the health and safety of our workers, their families, and the communities, Cerrejón has today gradually restarted operations.

In view of the crisis caused by COVID-19, Cerrejón has responsibly evaluated the impact of this emergency on our operations. We have applied the guidelines and
recommendations made by the authorities and undertaken biosafety protocols both within the operations and in our relations with other audiences. We have also
implemented the assurance actions measuring the effectiveness of all these measures.

Over the course of these weeks, while a Cerrejón contingency team was working on this implementation, the rest of our personnel has had access to information, talks, and courses for inclusion in their daily routines (both personal and work), all the necessary self-protection practices for a safe reactivation.

“We are aware of Cerrejón’s positive impact on the regional economy and our contributions to the country, which is why we have planned for a gradual, progressive reactivation of our operations under strict safety and control measures. All these measures have been verified by the mayors’ offices in our areas of influence, confirming in the operation the parameters we have established to reduce the risk of infection” , noted Juan Carlos Consuegra, vice president of Cerrejón and leader of the contingency team.

It is worth noting that, at the beginning, 80% of Cerrejón personnel were granted collective vacations. Subsequently, people not forming part of the contingency team, and who could not work from home, enjoyed paid leave.

For now, the operations will be re-established gradually, pit by pit, with the personnel closest to each one. For the time being, we are not considering bringing back to work people identified as being part of a vulnerable population. In addition, during the first stages, personnel from outside of La Guajira will not be joining production operations either.

To run the operations, Cerrejón has implemented five mandatory actions for all workers:

  1. Daily review of health status, with temperature checks and an in-person questionnaire and a
software one. People with symptoms will not be allowed access to the work sites.
  2. A minimum social distance of two metres, with signs on the floor to keep a minimum distance of one metre in all line-ups.
  3. Handling groups with signage and instructions on use in common areas to prevent overcrowding.
  4. Appropriate use of personal protective equipment such as respiratory masks, gloves, and glasses.
  5. Disinfection of vehicles, work areas, and repeated hand-washing.

During this emergency, Cerrejón has demonstrated its continued commitment to La Guajira with an investment of six billion pesos to distribute 25,000 boxes of foodstuffs amongst ethnic communities in lockdown, deliver up to 240,000 litres of drinking water a day to the regional government, and donate medical supplies to La Guajira’s hospitals so they are prepared to face COVID-19.
