The first needle alligators are born in the Cerrejón Wildlife Center

After 94 days of incubation, the first clutch of needle alligators was born in our Fauna Rehabilitation Center of Cerrejón. This milestone, framed in the Endangered Species Conservation program led by the company, aims to achieve a repopulation of this species in La Guajira.

The animals, typical of Alta Guajira, will remain in the Center until they reach the appropriate size and weight for their release in the Bahía Portete National Natural Park, located next to the Puerto Bolívar operation. To carry out the reproduction process, which is a pioneer in the department, we have made different efforts, such as adapting facilities for the maintenance of adult specimens and the constant monitoring carried out by expert biologists and veterinarians from the Omacha Foundation.

Since the inception of the Biodiversity Conservation programs, we have provided veterinary care and released more than 10,700 animals, including a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, and birds. Likewise, the program also contemplates the reproduction of other species such as the hicotea turtle and four more species of sea turtles, in collaboration with entities such as Corpoguajira, Herencia Ambiental Caribe, and the Humboldt Institute.
