Cerrejón planted 175,000 trees of endangered species in La Guajira.

December 13, 2019. Cerrejón carried out the planting and establishment of 175,000 trees of native and endangered species in the region such as the puy, the guayacan de bola, the ollita de mono and the corazón fino for the restoration and protection of 280 hectares of tropical dry forest in 2019, one of the most important and threatened ecosystems in the country.

These actions were carried out by the Cerrejón Foundation, the community associations Awavichor, Alceba, Raíz del Agua and the local company Biorecuperar in the Santa Isabel de Albania and Ojo Caro, Santa Helena and La Ceibita, plots located in the municipality of Hatonuevo, process for which more than 300 people from different communities in the sector were employed.

“In Cerrejón we are committed to leaving an environmental and social legacy for the department. Undoubtedly, the restoration of forests, the protection of water bodies and the conservation of threatened and ecologically important species, such as the jaguar, are the way to achieve it. This will only be a reality if the communities and authorities become the protagonists who lead it and make it possible,” said Juan Carlos García, Manager of Resettlements, Lands and Environmental Compensations of Cerrejón.

You gave the opportunity to the Alceba Community Association and with it you are giving the opportunity to the communities of La Guajira to earn their living, to contribute to our land, to value the forests and to tell our children: we reforest these lands and it is the heritage that we are going to leave to you, ”said Isolis Ojeda, Legal Representative of the Alceba Community Association.

One of Cerrejón’s missions is to generate social and environmental value for La Guajira and the country, with actions like this, the company has been working on the formation of a biological corridor of more than 25 thousand hectares that connects the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta with the Serranía de Perijá, which represents 9% of the goal that the Colombian Government has in the next 10 years of restoring 260 thousand hectares of tropical dry forest.
