Maicao Laboratory
As part of our support to La Guajira during the pandemic, we donated to the San José de Maicao hospital the first molecular biology laboratory for the analysis and processing of COVID-19 tests in the region, which included the purchase and transportation of more than 30 equipment and the adequacy of the facilities.
This project allows the department to have a health laboratory that, in the coming years, will serve not only for testing for COVID-19 but will also be used to detect other viruses such as dengue.
In a joint effort with the National Institute of Health, the Superintendency of Health, the Government of La Guajira, the Mayor's Office of Maicao and the San José Hospital, the project could be completed in just three months, helping the department to speed up the analysis of samples taken from the population and reduce transportation times to diagnostic centers in other departments and waiting for results.
Cerrejón supported the training sessions for laboratory personnel that were held in the city of Bogotá under the leadership of the National Institute of Health.
Cerrejón also provided access to 5,000 reagents that were used in the first tests carried out by the laboratory.
The laboratory has obtained the best results in the audit carried out on its processes by the FALAB Clinical Laboratory.
Among the main equipment that was installed, is the thermal cycler device and the RNA extraction device
