Wϋin-Manna Biodiversity Corridor

We have worked to build a biodiversity corridor of more than 25,000 hectares between the Serranía del Perijá and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in the interest of preserving the local tropical dry forest. We have preserved a passageway to the transit of endangered species such as the jaguar, which had not been seen in La Guajira for more than 50 years.

We have also contributed to the protection of threatened and endangered species such as the verawood, black sapote, perehuetano, monkey pot, raintree, garcero, and wildlife such as the military macaw, the vermilion cardinal, the neotropical otter, and the white-tailed deer.

The strengthening of the corridor in areas internal to and surrounding the mine is carried out together with neighboring communities, which have been trained in creating community nurseries and seedling production and carrying out their production activities sustainably.

The results of this project can be seen in the study carried out by the EAN university that confirms the positive effect of the areas conserved by Cerrejón in La Guajira, which are part of the biological corridor. (See the study here) Likewise, the Biodiversity Information System of Colombia (SiB Colombia), identifies us as the fourth company in Colombia that contributes and records the most data on biodiversity. • The biological corridor is a passageway for the transit of various species.

  • It allows us to contribute 9% of the goal of the Colombian State to restore 260,000 hectares of Tropical Dry Forest in the next 10 years.

  • We support the protection of threatened and endangered species.

  • The strengthening of the corridor in internal areas and surrounding the mine is carried out by the hand of neighboring communities.

  • Today these communities have the knowledge to carry out their productive activities in a sustainable way.

Declaration of Protected Areas

At Cerrejón, we seek to minimise harm to the environment through our operations, and we have experience on rehabilitation work in different ecosystems including both at the Mine and Puerto Bolívar.

Tropical Dry Forest Laboratory

Cerrejón and the Humboldt Institute established the first laboratory for investigating this ecosystem in the Colombian Caribbean with a permanent mega-plot for its monitoring.
