Declaration of Protected Areas
At Cerrejón, we seek to minimise harm to the environment through our operations, and we have experience on rehabilitation work in different ecosystems including both at the Mine and Puerto Bolívar.
Over the last 30 years, we have contributed to the declaration of more than 60,000 hectares of protected areas in partnership with Conservation International, the Caribbean Environmental Heritage Foundation (Fundación Herencia Ambiental Caribe), and Corpoguajira. This declaration includes the Montes de Oca Protected Forest Reserve, the Lower Ranchería River Basin DMI, and the Ranchería River delta. We will continue contributing to the preservation of these ecosystems.
An example of our commitment is the co-existence of Puerto Bolívar, and the Bahía Portete National Nature Park (declared in 2014 with Cerrejón's support).
In addition, we obtained the declaration of the first private civilian reserve (Aguas Blancas-Santa Helena-Mushaisa) for the conservation of 1,976 hectares located between the municipalities of Albania and Hatonuevo.
We have contributed to the declaration of more than 60,000 hectares of protected areas.
This has been a work in alliance with Conservation International, the Fundación Herencia Ambiental Caribe and Corpoguajira.
Among the protected areas is the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve and the DMI lower basin of the Ranchería River and the Ranchería River delta.
This Cerrejón effort seeks to ensure the preservation of these ecosystems.
Bahía Portete National Natural Park, declared in 2014 with the support of Cerrejón, an example of how industrial activity and environmental conservation can go hand in hand.
Today we are working on the declaration of the first private reserve of civil society Aguas Blancas -Santa Helena - Mushaisa, located between the municipalities of Albania and Hatonuevo.
